BALOO - This one day training course covers planning an overnighter, cooking, equipment, campfire planning, BSA camping policies, health and safety, program, first aid, sanitation, games, Cub Scout cooking, and more! Effective, April 2001 all adults giving leadership to a pack overnighter must complete Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation training to properly understand the importance of program intent, youth protection guidelines, health and safety, site selection, age-appropriate activities, and sufficient adult participation.

Chaplain Aide Training - In a Boy Scout Troop, the chaplain aide is an approved youth leadership position whose responsibilities include encouraging the spiritual growth and awareness of each member of the troop and assisting the troop chaplain (and adult committee members).
The training will help the chaplain aide:

  1. Plan appropriate interfaith religious services during troop outings
  2. Encourage troop members to strengthen their own relationships with God
  3. Ensure that spiritual emphasis is included in troop activities
  4. Help conduct an annual Scout-oriented religious observance
  5. Present an overview of the religious emblems program at troop meetings
  6. Help recognize troop members who receive their religious emblems

Climb On Safely - The Climb on Safely Training is designed to train BSA leaders to safely organize climbing and rappelling programs and where to find qualified climbing instructors. Climb On Safely is the climbing and rappelling equivalent to the BSA's Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat guidelines for aquatic activities. Leaders should be aware that Climb on Safely is an orientation only and does not constitute training on how to climb or rappel.

Cub Scout Leader Specific Training - Cub Scout Leader Basic Training is a training course for Cubmasters, den leaders, coaches, their assistants, pack committee members, and all other Cub Scout leaders.

Den Chief - Designed for Boy Scouts who are or will be serving as a Den Chief. This course is a requirement for the Den Chief Award.

Fast Start Training - A first look at Scout Leadership. This training is a must for any leader before working with the scouts. Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing Fast Start are all available online* and only take 15 - 20 minutes! Fast Start is also available as a videotape. Your unit may have a copy or it's available from Council.

FOS (Friends of Scouting) Presenter Training - Friends of Scouting (FOS) are exactly that - Friends of Scouting. And the FOS campaign is the annual raising of funds to help Scouting continue. Being an FOS presenter is a very important job. A large portion of the Councils budget comes from FOS contributions. Every unit needs to have an FOS presentation every year. And every FOS presentation needs a presenter. Help get the word out. A presentation is only 5-10 minutes long, but is key to the survival of Scouting.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills - This training will give you the hands on practical outdoor skills needed to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. This training is geared toward the Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster, but Webelos Leaders are welcome too! Bring a mug, Boy Scout Handbook, and Scoutmaster Handbook. This training is a whole weekend of fun generally held at Camp Agawam, but check the Calendar to be sure.
This training is usually preceded by the Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training and is priced together, typically around $30.

Leave No Trace - The Trainer course [Course Description] is a vital component of the nationwide Leave No Trace program. Participants receive training in LNT skills and ethics in a two day format. The Trainer course assists the student participants in learning more about the seven principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for disseminating these low impact skills. Successful graduates of the trainer course gain the skills to teach LNT techniques and ethics to their clients, friends and family. Participants learn the concepts of Leave No Trace and prepare to teach LNT curriculum in a variety of settings such as schools, camps, parks, wilderness, and front country areas. Training topics include the underlying outdoor ethics and seven principles of LNT: Plan Ahead and Prepare, Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces, Dispose of Waste Properly, Leave What You Find, Minimize Campfire Impacts, Respect Wildlife, Be Considerate of Other Visitors. All interested students should read Teaching Leave No Trace - Activities for teaching responsible outdoor skills under Teaching Resources at www.LNT.org*. This course will provide you with experience in teaching Leave No Trace Skills and Ethics to young people and their leaders. Each participant in the class will teach one module of the course during the weekend. After you send in your enrollment and deposit, you will receive a pre-class preparation packet in the regular mail. The course involves one required evening session, and an overnight campout. For the Boy Scouts, you will also be able to administer the BSA LNT Awareness Award Program for your units. A National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) certified LNT Master Trainer will lead the course.

Merit Badge Counselor - This training is held at the district level at least once a year. The counselors learn the key points and steps in helping to teach the Boy Scouts their vocation, interest or hobby.

National Youth Leadership Training - National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is a seven-day, six night outdoor experience for youth leaders in support of the Scoutmaster’s responsibility for the training of troop youth leaders. Built on the legacy of past Junior Leader Training successes, the new syllabus integrates the best of modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of the Scouting experience. Through activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, NYLT participants will be engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the skills and confidence to lead well. Through a wide range of activities, events, games, and adventures, NYLT participants will work and play together as they put into action the best that Scouting has to offer. Clinton Valley Council, using a nationally approved outline and under the leadership of quality volunteers, will conduct the conference.

New Leader Essentials - An introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style with Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Venturing. Videos, discussions, and hands-on reinforcement are presented during the 90-minute training session. Ideally all unit-based volunteers - Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing leaders - take this session at the same time, so they understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve. This training will answer all your questions including these topics:

-- Where do I fit in?
-- Who pays for Scouting?
-- How do I keep Scouting safe?
-- Your bridge into Scouting

This course is required before Leader Specific Training. Cost: Free!

OKPIK Cold Weather Training - All Leaders & Boy Scouts 16 and over are welcome to attend this Cold Weather Camping training. A leader in developed this optimum cold weather training in Minnesota’s Northern Tier High Adventure Base high-adventure . This is the same training given to soldiers in the US Army. This training will give the leader the skills & knowledge to take Scouts on that winter campout with confidence and to make the Scout's experience one they will enjoy for a lifetime. This training comes in two sessions: Classroom - two days of instruction, and Outdoor Weekend - Three days and two nights putting these skills to use. Registration opens in the fall, so keep your eyes open for this one.

Outdoor Webelos Leader Training - 24 hours of exciting hands on training designed for the Webelos Leaders and Assistants in your pack. It will also benefit Cubmasters, Committee Members and parents of Webelos Scouts who want a better understanding of the Webelos program. Training covers the Forester, Geologist, Naturalist, Outdoorsman, and Readyman Activity badges, cooking, knot/ropes, wood tools, fire building, site selection, bedding/tents, weather and much more. Bring: Smile, paper & pencil, cup or mug, pocket knife, camp chair, scout uniform and spirit, appropriate outdoor clothing and tent/camping gear. Typical cost: $25, save $5 for registering early. Fees include dinner, snacks, breakfast & resource materials.

Popcorn Training - Learn the ins & outs of having a successful Popcorn FUNraiser. If done right, this can be the biggest moneymaker for your unit. For some units, it's the only moneymaker for the year! It is important that every unit send at least one representative. Remember this is the first requirement to earn your 5% Bonus.

Pow Wow - Typically held by Council, Pow Wow is Scout leader training designed to provide ideas, skills, and resources to all Scout volunteers. Although Pow Wow is usually for Cub Scout leaders, occasionally an all Scout Pow Wow is hosted. Check the calendar for dates, times, locations, and details. In recent years the council, in conjunction with the Detroit Area Council has been holding a University of Scouting for all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing leaders.

Powder Horn - Powder Horn is a training opportunity designed to expose unit leaders to activities and resources necessary to operate a successful High Adventure program in their Troops and Crews. It is designed to help Boy Scout and Venturing Leaders to safely conduct outdoor activities of a fun and challenging nature. It provides an introduction to the resources necessary to successfully lead their Venturers and older Boy Scouts through a program of high adventure. Expert consultants who will help you to plan and conduct high adventure activities will conduct topics. Powder Horn was developed by the National Council’s Venturing Division and is based on the requirements for the Venturing Ranger Award.

Rechartering Training - Don't get overwhelmed by the rechartering process, it's no big deal, but it does need to be done correctly. A little training goes a long way to make this annual event go smoothly. Even if you think you "know it all", send someone from your unit to get the latest details. It's also a great way to get a new adult some easy training. Check the Calendar for place & time.

Roundtable - Where can you get the latest tips & tricks to successful scouting? Where can you get together with other adults and find out what's going on & coming up? Meet with those that have been there and done that. Come to Roundtable.

Safe Swim Defense / Safety Afloat - This training is intended for ALL adult leaders, Venturers, Explorers, and older Boy Scouts, to assist with safe execution of unit swimming and boating activities. This training is typically 2½ hours long and is free of charge. This training certification is good for two years. This training is now available online*!

School Night Training - This is for Packs ONLY and is very important to the growth of the unit. School Night Training covers everything from setting up and doing boy talks to a school night presentation. Of course, you'll also learn how to handle the paperwork.

Scoutmaster / Asst. Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training - This training will focus on the essentials of being a good Scoutmaster. This course will give you the confidence and skills needed to ensure your immediate success in being an effective Scout Leader. Plan for full day to get all this important information. But, what's one day for all you'll be able to supply in return? Webelos Leaders are welcome to attend.
This course is usually bundled with Introduction to Outdoor Skills.

Troop Committee Challenge - Boy Scout Troop Committee Challenge training has been developed to help troop committee members better understand their roles and responsibilities. Through hands-on experimental learning, this training will also enable troop committee members to better deliver the promise in support of the troop, Scoutmaster and Scouts. This training is most effective if the whole committee can attend training together.
This fast paced three-hour session will serve as a vital tool for new and veteran committee members to build the committee team. Committee members, Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters are encouraged to attend. Bring your Troop Committee Guide Book. Get your whole Troop Committee together and have a training session to suit your schedule. Contact your District Boy Scout Training Chair for details.

University of Scouting - This day long training is designed for all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing leaders and takes the place of the Pow Wow training.

Venturing Leader Specific - Training designed to introduce adult Venturing Crew leaders to the basic information needed to operate the Crew program.

Wood Badge for the 21st Century - Once a leader has completed their Basic Training, s/he can take this training. Wood Badge has evolved into the core leadership skills course for the BSA. The new Wood Badge course focuses on strengthening every volunteer's ability to work with and lead groups of youth and adults and is less focused on outdoor skills, which are more effectively addressed in other courses. This is the only advanced leadership training that is offered by the BSA. Wood Badge for the 21st Century is open to all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing leaders.

Youth Protection Training -A 90 minute training session designed to inform Scouters about how to keep our children safe and recognize when they're aren't. This is a must-attend for every registered adult. You know this is important stuff. Now, get this training. This training is now available online*. The BSA online YPT must be accessed from our Council web site. Click the appropriate link once you're there.
